Modern Era Sustainable Buildings Using LECA Precast Elements Approach

“Green” or “sustainable” buildings contain key resources such as energy, water, materials more efficiently than buildings that are just built normally.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performances such as energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.

The system is categorized in five basic areas: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, and Indoor Environmental Quality.

In the Building industry, there are different type of materials which help LEED system to grow and expand. Light Expanded Clay Aggregate (LECA) is one of this material which improves LEED performance by its main advantages such as Lightness, Thermal Insulation, Sound Insulation, fire resistance and limited water absorption.

Light Expanded Clay Aggregate (LECA) is porous ceramic product with a uniform pore structure of fine, closed cells and with a densely sintered, firm external skin. It is manufactured in Rotary kilns from raw materials containing clay minerals, between 1100 °C and 1200 °C, resulting in a significant increase in volume due to expansion. The LECA pebbles internal cellular structure with thousands of air-filled cavities gives Thermal and Sound insulation properties.

LECA Production system operates an environmental management system that complies with voluntary international Standard ISO 14001:2004 and Health and Safety Management Best Practice that meets British Standard BS OHAS 18001.LECA manufacturing process respects the environment and total absence of harmful emissions (even in the presence of fire) make it ideal for sustainable construction. LECA is an expanded ceramic which is not hazardous to health. Due to its Ceramic base, it is recyclable material and it lasts long.In addition LECA plant use a lot of recycled food industry waste as fuel which helps to protect an environment and limit the carbon footprint of material.

Products made from LECA Aggregates are Lightweight Precast Elements, Lightweight Concrete and Lightweight and Insulating Grout.

Lightweight Concrete: Structural or non-structural lightweight concrete can be defined as a concrete with closed or open structure contains both ordinary aggregate and LECA aggregate. In addition to the weight saving, lightweight concrete has substantially better fire resistant qualities, significantly lower heat transmission, remarkable moisture resistance and more durability than normal weight concrete.

Insulating Grout: LECA Mortar is type of premix of Lightweight concrete which can be used for several applications such as roof insulation, cover steel member to protect against fire and corrosion and it applies for block work to decease more weight per square meter and increase the thermal/sound insulation.

Lightweight Precast Elements and Masonry Units: LECA is the raw material for many prefabricated components. LECA blocks, prefabricated panels, lightweight bricks artificial stones floor tiles wall tiles and pavement are well-known products which have advantages of lightening, moisture resistance, fire resistance, sound insulation and thermal insulation. Leca Building blocks are produced by mixing LECA with cement, sand and water. The lightweight blocks are cast in normal block making machines that compact and vibrate the concrete in one single operation. Leca block is ideal for all types of exterior and interior walls and suitable for any physical operation such as cutting, nailing, transfixing or screwing also ridge extending to make proper route for wire, pipe and other installing components without any cracking on the surface of the material. There are different types of LECA Lightweight blocks with different shape and dimensions.

The newest Leca block product is called Leca Green Block which is an environmental block close to Zero energy waste. Buildings built with these blocks are categorized in GREEN Building classification. LECA Green Block can resist fire for more than 5 hours. Size of this block is 49 x 25 x 20 cm, the weight is about 17 kg, Density of 700 kg/m3, Compressive Strength can be more than 2.5 MPa .This Block made of eight layer lightweight concrete and seven layers of mid-air film with Thermal Conductivity of 0.45 w/mc and Sound reduction about 54 dB can be applied for passive houses, amphitheaters, cinema halls, Hotels, shopping malls, conference and concert halls.

The other new block is called LECA Thermo Block to increase Thermal conductivity of LECA blocks. This block is made from three layer Lightweight concrete and 2 layers of Mid-air film with Thermal conductivity of 0.17 w/mc. The size of this block is 49 x 17.5 x 20 cm, the weight is 12 kg, Density of 750 kg/m3, Compressive Strength can be more than 2.5 MPa with Sound reduction about 50 dB and fire resistance more than 3 hours.

Thermo Block mainly used for external walls especially in areas with difficult weather conditions and also for buildings in energy saving category. The internal layers of this block increases Thermal Insulation and also Sound Insulation properties. Because of this advantages, this block applies in external walls facing noisy places and streets. Passing pipe installation in separate layers of this block maintains thermal and acoustic resistance and increase strength of the wall.

Leca Super Sound block is made from three layer Lightweight concrete and 2 layers of Mid-air film with Thermal conductivity of 0.17 w/mc. The size of this block is 49 x 12 x 20 cm, the weight is 9 kg, Density of 760 kg/m3, Compressive Strength is 2 MPa with Sound reduction about 49 dB and fire resistance more than 3 hours.

This block specially applied for the walls between two units, Partition walls in hotels and hospitals, two adjacent school classes at the educational systems. By applying Leca super sound block, Thermal and sound Insulated layer was created with a minimum possible weight. The airborne sounds will be controlled by its high sound resistance property. According to the low width of this block the useful space inside the building will be increased. The building will be sound insulated with lowest price.

The best way to acoustic the building  is during construction phase because after finishing the wall work, adding any insulation layer to wall is too costly while its execution makes some more difficulties. Pipes are easily installed in separate layers of this block. There is no need for bracing the span up to 6 meters when this block is applied. Leca Super Sound Block maintain the possibility of installing panels and equipment on the wall without damaging the neighbor’s wall.
